Like many of us, when I see those magical words "Marked Down, Limited Time Only," or my all-time favorite, "50% Off," I swoon and all reasonable judgment goes out the window. I can’t tell you how many ugly sweaters, awkward pairs of shoes or promising pieces of exercise equipment I own just because they were “on sale.” I could convince myself to buy just about anything if I thought I was saving money by doing so. I mean, a deal’s a deal, right?
That said, I’ve always been a big participant on Black Friday — rising early, despite my turkey hangover to collect with the masses and get the best holiday deals. But after years of loyalty to the consumer-based holiday, I began to notice; Black Friday was beginning to lose its luster. The day was spent battling traffic, only to hunt for parking, fight the crowds and come home exhausted. And like that plane ticket you purchased with the three-hour layover, it was never worth it. Once I was home, I’d rummage through my loot, less impressed by my purchases than I had been while in-store.
So this year I’ve vowed to try an alternate approach. This year, I’m going to spend my Black Friday taking care of me. Yep, I’m headed to the spa. And while I’ll never turn my back on a good sale, I’ll think twice before braving the crowds on the busiest shopping day of the year.
